W/R: Rastafarian Council demands removal of DVLA boss for discrimination

The Rastafari Council, Ghana, the umbrella body of members of the Rastafari Faith is calling for the removal  of the Western Regional Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (D.V.L.A) Emmanuel Narh from office.

According to the council, Mr. Narh is not fit to hold the office because discriminates against Rastafarians.

The DVLA officer was heard on a radio discussion in Takoradi saying that the office does not give license to just any Rastafarian.
“ We don’t give license to just any rasta. You need to prove that you belong to a credible rasta faith before we can grant you a license. Or you need to prove that you belong to a family with roots and enough grounds not to cut your hair,” he said.

The Council says the claim by the Western Regional DVLA head is an affront on Article 21 (c) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution that guarantees the rights and liberties of all Ghanaians devoid of religion.

“The Western Regional DVLA head by his pronouncements shows how bigoted he is to members of the Rastafari Faith. On what basis can one deny granting of a drivers’ license to a Ghanaian on the basis of religion? One must also be educated that not all who wear locks are members of the Rastafari Faith that is a belief system that the 1992 Constitution guarantees under the Freedom of religion in Article 21 (c),” the council said in a statement.

On the same programme , Ben Kwasi Ansah, a Ghana Private Road Transport official in Takoradi is also on record to have made insulting remarks about the Rastafari Faith.

“The Rastafari Council is calling on the likes Emmanuel Narh. And Ben Kwesi Ansah to exert their energies to rid the roads of rickety vehicles and alcoholic drivers as well as substance abusers like tramadol rather than be myopic and bigoted at members of the Rastafari Faith. If the said Western Regional DVLA head is not removed from office , the Rastafari Council will petition the Commission For Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to uphold the dignity and rights of its members,” the statement added.

Ghana’s Black Stars defeated Mauritania 3-1 in an international friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

The game formed part of the team’s preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

With Both Ghana and Mauritania confirming places at the competition, they needed to test their strength before the tournament.

Coach Kwesi Appiah however handed opportunities to some fringe players in his squad with the likes of Alfred Duncan, Amos Frimpong, Joseph Aidoo, Ernest Asante and Kwesi Appiah were all given the chance to play.

Kwesi Appiah who was making his first appearance for the Black Stars after four years shot Ghana into the lead from the penalty spot. The Wimbledon forward was fouled in the box and took the mandate on himself by converting to put Ghana ahead.

Midfielder Adama Ba pulled parity after executing an excellent free kick from the edge of the box.

The introduction of Mubarak Wakaso, Caleb Ekuban, Jordan Ayew and Christian Atsu sparked some light into Ghana’s attack.

Ekuban restored Ghana’s lead after connecting a header into the net. Thomas Partey completed victory with Ghana’s third in the 72nd minute.

Before the end, Asante Kotoko No.1 goalkeeper Felix Annan was introduced and he got taste of the action.

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has described the Right to Information Law which was passed Tuesday night as one of the best in the world.

” Honourable members the RTI has gone through the third reading and is hereby duly passed. This law is one of the best ever passed in any part of the world,” he declared in Parliament immediately after the passage of the law.

The bill was relayed before Parliament in March last year by the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joseph Kpemka Dindiok after the previous parliament, the sixth of the fourth republic failed to pass it into law.

It had been over two decades since it was first drafted under the auspices of the Institute of Economic Affairs, IEA and more than a decade since the Executive arm of government in 2002 drafted the first RTI bill.

The much-anticipated bill was to be passed into law on Friday 22 March but was removed from the House’s order paper or programme line on Thursday 21 March by the Speaker of Parliament Prof Mike Oquaye after demands by Civil Society Organisations for their proposals to be incorporated into the bill before it is passed.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the governing council of the University of Education Winneba, Professor Nicholas Abakah.

UTAG has also called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene in the impasse at the University.

It is the latest in a string of developments that have followed the violent students’ demonstration which resulted in the indefinite shutdown of the University.

UTAG which had earlier called for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor Professor Afful Bronie, is now calling on the Ministry of Education, EOCO and the Special Prosecutor to launch a full scale probe into the allegations of victimization levelled against the Vice Chancellor.

UTAG wants a neutral person to take over the running of the school until all the issues are resolved.

Addressing Journalists Tuesday, Dr Eric Opoku, National UTAG President said UTAG will take further action if its demands are not met.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has rejected justifications by UEW management over the promotion of council chair, Prof. Abakah to professorship status.

Management of the University denied suggestions it side stepped laid down procedures in the promotion process arguing the University’s statutes was revised in 2017.

PRO of the university, Ernest Azutiga told Starr News the statutes offers staff of the university an advantage they had been denied.

But according to the minority the latest action by management of the university is only a reward system for its loyalists.

Parliament has finally passed the Right to Information (RTI) bill into law on Tuesday 26 March.

The much-anticipated bill was to be pass into law on Friday 22 March but was ordered removed from the House’s order paper or programme line on Thursday 21 March by the Speaker of Parliament Prof Mike Oquaye after demands by Civil Society Organisations for their proposals to be incorporated into the bill before it is passed.

In the meantime, the government said on Sunday 24 March that it has commenced preparatory work ahead of the passage of the bill.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah told Journalists in Accra that the bill in its current form requires the establishment of Information Units in all public offices, recruitment and training of information officers to man these units, the establishment of the RTI commission and the completion of various administrative protocols before the commencement of the next fiscal year.

“These are necessary to ensure that there will indeed be the infrastructure that can deliver on the RTI requests filed under this new law,” he said.

He said the new law will be a major addition to the credential of Ghana as a strong democracy and President Akufo-Addo who for many years has championed the cause of enhancing the frontiers of human rights.

The mother of the baby who was stolen in Takoradi in the Western region, Nana Akosua Bowaa, says she has learnt her lesson and would never leave her child in the hands of a stranger again.

The Takoradi Police SWAT team found Francis Mawusi Ahiabenu at Efiakuma with the suspect and a man believed to be her husband.

The suspects are in the custody of the Police as investigations into the incident continue.

Speaking on Morning Starr on Tuesday, March 26, Akosua Bowaa thanked Ghanaians and the Police Service for the support adding that she has been through a lot since her baby went missing on Friday.

Akosua Bowaa said she had learnt a lot from the incident and would be more vigilant going forward.

She also admonished parents not to easily trust strangers who offer their help.

Background

Last Friday, the suspect who was dressed in a long dress with a veil covering her face pretended to be shopping in the market and engaged the victim’s mother, Akosua Bowaa, in a hearty conversation to the extent that the two started speaking their local dialect, Ewe.

The unidentified suspect requested Akosua Bowaa to hand over her baby boy to her to relieve her of the pressure so she could serve customers better.

The suspect then took the one-year-old boy and his siblings to a nearby pastries shop and bought them some, and later returned the siblings leaving the one year old boy with the pastries seller.

The suspect then promised to return the boy but subsequently bolted away with the boy without the mother noticing.

Later, the victim’s mother, realising their absence at the pastries shop, raised an alarm but it was too late to trace the whereabouts of her baby

The frustrated mother began searching for her baby but could only get footage of her missing baby and the suspect from some banks whose CCTV captured them.

Challenging their dismissal in the petition presented on their behalf by Labour Consultant Seth Abloso the workers said: “The scale of terminations so far appear to be targeted at ex-workers of UT Bank and Capital Bank, after they have conscientiously worked to ensure the seamless transfer of customers’ records and details of transactions to ensure a successful integration exercise.”
